Social Networks That Show Rapid Growth and Promise to Become Really Strong in the Near Future

Social media has become extremely powerful lately as a tool for communication between web users, even getting ahead of email and instant messaging. While Facebook reigns over the social media environment, other networks appear to very soon catch it up from behind, respectively Tumblr, Google+ and Pinterest.

Google+ is Google’s social networking platform, and its users have reached the number of 25 million in just one month. It is an impressive number, since Twitter needed 33 months of being in business to reach the same figure. According to ComScore, most of the users came from the U.S., followed by India. In September 2012 it reached the number of 400 million registered users, and 100 million of them seem to be active on a monthly basis.

Pinterest is an online pinboard where users are invited to manage and share the things that are of interest to them. Launched two years ago, this social photo sharing website has seen an increase of 512 percent in the time that its members spend visiting the site, in the interval between May and October 2012. This means an average of 72 minutes logged in to the website. A report from ComScore for January 2012 showed that the website had 11.7 million unique visitors from the U.S., which made it the site to break through the mark of 10 million unique visitors the fastest. In August this year, it has also exceeded Tumblr to what monthly unique visitors are concerned, for the first time. Changes that are to be made according to recent promises might attract even more visitors. It has been announced that business pages and individual profiles will be differentiated. Business accounts will be verified and they will be more visible in search results. It must be said that commercial accounts used to be forbidden.

Founded in 2007, Tumblr is a microblogging platform, self-titled “the easiest way to blog”, and a social networking website. Its users can post multimedia and other type of content to a short-form blog. They can choose to make their blogs private and they can follow the blogs of other users. A statistic from early October 2012 shows that Tumblr had 77 million blogs at that time. From July 2010 and until July the next year, its unique visitor number went up by 218 per cent, scoring 13.4 million unique visitors in the U.S. only. Also Tumblr reported that, in the 12 months before October 2012, its users spent 42 percent more time on the site during their visits. This is an average of 82 minutes/visit.

Tagged is a social discovery website that was launched in 2004; what it does is that it allows its members to view other members’ profiles, share tags, offer virtual gifts and play various games. Tagged has purchased Digsby, a social and instant messenger client, and also WeGame, a gaming application. It currently has 100 million members according to its own saying. On average, its users spend close to two and a half hours on site, which represents an increase of 25 percent. It may not be such a new network, but it's popularity has been growing more and more in past few years.

Aside from these social networks that were founded in the U.S., social sites from other countries are also becoming stronger, such as Sina Weibo (microblogging site from China), Badoo (Great Britain) and Odnoklassniki (Russia). All in all, social networks appear to have a good future ahead of them.
